Today is Nelson Mandela day, one the most inspirational and influential people to choose to use his words and beliefs to do right in the world. A revolutionary politician whose vision and insight into how the world could be, will never be forgotten. Mandela used his position and power as President of South Africa to confront institutionalised racism, inequality, poverty; ‘no one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.’ He saw the world in such an amazing way, and knew we had the tools ourselves to change our world we are living in: ‘Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings’ and ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. When you step back and look and things, and remove the negativity instilled upon us daily and really open your mind, it’s clear to see the world though Mandela’s eyes, and believe his words are so powerful because they are true. We do have the tools to create our own future; if the effort put into negativity were saved for positivity so many wonderful things can be achieved. ‘It always seems impossible, until it is done’ – I believe it can be done.
It just takes each of us to make that decision ourselves, to focus on us, and what we can achieve if we can adjust our modest and attitude to embrace Mandela’s way of thinking and seeing the world. ‘As I walked out of the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison’ and this is true metaphorically speaking for each of us. We have to start believing in ourselves, and the power of our own words and actions, and think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.
It begins with you; be a part of a changing, evolving world by becoming better; the best version of you. I know my mind has been opened to believe each persons’ actions really do make a difference at any level of life. I want to change lives, and I know I will.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest dear is that we are powerful beyond measure”
